  • School Days

I can't seem to find time to blog about my summer, so I'll just summarize.  It was very busy and very fun.  We went camping 3 times and went to visit relatives in GA.  Olivia was in 2 plays.  Callie continued horse lessons, and Ella took gymnastics.  Luke loved to go to the pool and was jumping off the diving board with swimmies on!

We are getting into a school routine now and the girls like their new teachers.  Ella started kindergarten and has the same teacher Callie had- Ms. Smith.   Callie seems to be doing well in 5th grade and Olivia has made new friends in 7th.  Olivia has moved up to youth group at church, so she has lots of activities and retreats planned.  It is a new and busy time.

The big news is Luke starting preschool.  I can't believe my baby boy is 3.  He loves school and told Ella that she could not go to his school because it was special!  Today he got in the car and said "My shirt is green Momma"  He is learning a lot and having fun.  I am going to volunteer in Ella's class on Mondays while he is there.  I enjoy blogging, but it can be a big time drain.  It is fun to look back on and remember special events.  Maybe now that I updated, I will make an effort to stay caught up.

  • Our first camping trip

Although we have stayed in a cabin 3 times and loved it, we recently had our first real tent camping experience.  It was so much fun.  The weather was almost perfect just a little to warm with the high in the 90's.  This was a trip sponsored by the park service, so when we first arrived our great ranger Elizabeth helped us set up our tent.  Chuck could not come until later because of work.  I was very unsure of how to set up a tent, but it was surprisingly easy.  The girls enjoyed pitching in to help.  We were very excited when Elizabeth told us the 4 man tent provided for the camp out was ours to keep.

Next we went to explore the park.  They had demonstrations of camping activities, crafts, camp safety bingo, guided nature walks, fishing, kayaking,  and free paddle boating and canoeing.  The girls wanted to try paddle boating, so I braved it by myself with all 4 kids.  It was fun, but by the end we were hot and tired.   I was holding on to Luke while he laid on the front of the boat and put his hand in the water.

When Chuck arrived the girls voted for more water fun and went to try out the canoes and the kayak.  Luke fell asleep in my lap under a shade tree.  Olivia and Callie were very excited to paddle their own kayaks.  Chuck and Ella enjoyed the canoe.

Then it was time to head back to the campsite for our first lesson in camp fire cooking.  We made lemon chicken in foil packets and hobo stew.  The kids really enjoyed helping to fix it and eating it.  I feel that these are meals we could definitely cook on our own next time. If anyone has other suggestions for camp cooking  I would love to hear them.

After dinner they had smores, bananas sliced in two with marshmallows and chocolate inside wrapped in tinfoil and placed on the coals, and camp fire stories.  The kids loved every minute of it and of course did not want it to end.  This brings me to my biggest complaint about the weekend.  It took them forever to go to sleep!  If you have any tips on getting kids to sleep in a strange space when they are all crammed together please let me know.  They talked and fussed for an hour and a half  before they gave in.  I am thankful that once they went to sleep they did sleep well all night.  One of our neighbors was not so lucky.  We heard their son crying several times during the night.  We had one tent with the kids and we slept in a separate tent, but I think I would have felt better sleeping in the same tent.  I kept worrying about them.  We all survived though.

The next morning we cooked egg omelets in ziplock bags which we put in boiling water.  They were really good.  Then we packed up all the gear and headed out.  The experience was a great introduction to camping and I can't wait to go again.  My only fear is that we won't get to again before it gets to be too hot.

  • Spring Break Fun

Last week the kids were off from school for spring break.  At first I was kind of bummed out about not being able to go out of town, but the week filled up fast with lots of fun activities to do.  The weather was cold on Monday and Tuesday so we picked inside things to do.  We went to the State Museum, the zoo, the park, an inflatable playground called Monkey business, and the mall.  The kids had a lot of fun and tired themselves out.  Our Easter Celebration was wonderful and memorable.  This is the first year that Luke had a clue what Easter was about.  He came out of his 2 year old Sunday School class saying " Jesus is Alive".  Ella and Luke both loved the Resurrection Eggs.  I am thankful for the opportunity to share this special time with my family.

    Checking out the dinosaurs

Luke loved the model train and the real life sized train.

Callie taught a lesson in the old school house.

    Ella is a Caterpillar girl!

Exploring nature and playing in the pond made the trip to the park so much fun.  The spring weather was perfect.

  • Ella Catherine's birthday.

We can't believe how fast time has flown by.  Ella celebrated her 5th birthday on March 9.  She had a Strawberry shortcake party with 9 of her friends from church and preschool.  We had the most fantastic weather with the temperature being in the 80's!   Everyone had a great time playing games, making crafts, and eating cake.  The trampoline was a huge hit.  Olivia and Callie really helped a lot with the decorations and the party games.

Everyone loved the strawberry cake, goldfish, and stawberry whoppers!

Ella had so much fun opening her presents and playing with her friends.

Ella is such a joy to have in our family.   She lovingly takes care of Luke and Jordyn.  Her imagination helps their play to be so much fun.  I love seeing her and Luke walking hand in hand.  Olivia plays dress up with Ella treating her like a little princess.  Callie likes to read books to Ella and to play Barbies with her.  She has turned into quite the little helper lately.  Before her party she washed windows for almost an hour.  She has also begun making her bed, and trying her best to keep her room clean.  One of her other main interests right now is art projects.  She constantly wants to color, glue, and create things.  I actually helped her sew a small pillow the other day.  As her preschool years draw to a close I feel a bittersweet sadness.  I will have many memories of this wonderful time with her.  I know she loves school and will have a wonderful time in kindergarten, but I will miss her.
